Master of Architecture student Mu Qu Jennifer Liu is among the winners of the 15th edition of the AZ Awards annual competition, hosted by AZURE magazine.

A group project titled Tempo, by Liu and University of Manitoba students Nikki Elim Ng and Natalie Cole Bajet, won the A+ Student and People’s Choice award categories. The AZ Awards Gala took place on June 19 in Toronto.

Envisioned for the Empordà Wetlands of Catalonia, Spain, the project proposes an eco-village designed for community interaction. It features 20 housing units, markets, and floating farms, as well as a town hall, school, multi-faith building, and biogas facility.

“They’re creating a sustainable village and showing it in different kinds of moments,” said AZ Awards juror Amelle Schultz. “It’s focusing on the right things — and beautifully. The elevations are really elegant and convey the ideas clearly.”

Liu is in the final year of the three-year Master of Architecture program at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism.

Earlier this year, the project by the three-person team also won first prize in an international competition to design a floating house in a sensitive wetland area.
