Associate Professor Ozayr Saloojee will take part in a panel discussion, titled Particulate Matters, at the University of Virginia School of Architecture on April 18.

Dr. Saloojee is one of three invited guest speakers for the Benjamin C. Howland Memorial Symposium, along with Danika Cooper, (University of California, Berkeley) and Jane Mah Hutton, (University of Waterloo.) The moderator is Erin Putalik, of the University of Virginia.

The 2024 Howland Symposium engages with the scale of the particulate — from dust, smoke, sand, gravel, or similarly mobile units of matter — and asks what new publics, and public obligations become legible when the design fields consider the material world through this lens.

In a series of situated engagements with a variety of particulate matter, the symposium panelists will share recent research on the political, environmental, and human implications of mobile matter, and explore the ways in which the design fields might more deeply engage with this often-unruly category of materials.

Saloojee is an associate professor of architecture at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism. He is cross-appointed at Carleton University’s Institute for African Studies and is also affiliate faculty at the Centre for the Study of Islam. He currently serves as Associate Editor of Design for the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) and is a member of Dark Matter University.

His teaching, research and creative practice link architecture, politically contested terrains, design justice and geo-imaginaries, as well as questions of tradition and modernity in Islamic art and architecture.
