Jaakko Torvinen
Visiting Critic
Jaakko Torvinen is an architect and doctoral researcher from Finland whose work focuses on sustainable wood architecture and experimental construction methods. Operating between research and practice, his work explores the structural and architectural potential of organically shaped wood – so called misfit wood.
Torvinen holds a Master of Architecture degree from Aalto University, where his thesis project, Pikku-Finlandia, was realized as a full-scale public building in central Helsinki. Designed as a temporary events venue during the renovation of Finlandia Hall, the project is notable for its use of whole pine trunks with branches intact as structural columns and its reversible, design for disassembly strategy.
In addition to Pikku-Finlandia, Torvinen has completed a second built project, further developing his interest in misfit wood in architecture. Both realized works have received national and international recognition.
His work has been honored with the Wallpaper* Design Award 2026 and Wallpaper* Rising Star 2022, garnered several nominations across international and national awards, including recognition in the Finnish Wood Award and nomination as a Young Talent in the EU Mies Awards.
As a PhD researcher, Torvinen investigates the architectural and structural use of organically shaped and non-standard wood in architecture and construction. His research challenges industrial standardization by examining how irregular, naturally grown wooden elements can inform new design methodologies, structural systems, and circular building strategies. Through built experimentation and academic inquiry, he contributes to contemporary discourse on regenerative architecture and the future of timber construction.
