Ian Dayagbil

Visiting Scholar

Ian Dayagbil draws on experience spanning large-scale urban design, computational
masterplanning, and technology development.

Previously at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in Chicago, he worked as an Urban Designer
and Data & Computation Coordinator, supporting complex planning efforts through toolchains
that linked GIS and formal generative systems to drive data-driven models across increasingly
large scales of urban intervention. His design portfolio spans North America, the Middle East,
and Asia. His work also extends into software and technology. As Generative Systems Lead at
the venture-backed startup Cedar Build, Ian developed plugins and typology data products to
automate site analysis and the design of infill housing.

Ian has also taught spatial analysis and visualization in the Master of City Design program at the
University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), within the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs
(CUPPA).

His academic interests mirror his professional interests: complex systems, multifamily housing,
new cities, geodesign, information architecture, digital and physical infrastructure, startup
ecosystems, and the problem of Scale. Ian holds degrees from Carleton University and SCI-Arc.

Education:

Master of Science in Design of Cities – Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)
Bachelor of Architectural Studies in Urbanism – Carleton University
