Sheryl Boyle

Associate Professor

Dr. Sheryl Boyle is the director of the CSALT materials research lab at Carleton. She supervises immersive materials research and innovative design for manufacturing and assembly (DfMA) processes, including work in building components for prefabrication, biogenic materials, craft knowledge, and construction systems that contribute to a circular economy. Her work brings processes of design together with materiality alongside both digital and manual fabrication in the sensory and experimental realm of research creation.

Recent research:
– MITACS grant with ABB Robotics looking at digital design and robotic assembly of modular prefabricated retrofit panels
– Collaboration with ETH Zürich’s DFAB lab robotics technician supporting COMPAS_RRC for digital fabrication for architects
– MITACS with the Canadian Precast Prestressed Concrete Institute exploring how robotics can be employed in reusable formwork
– Industry partnership contract looking at prefabrication processes for housing.
– IC-IMPACTS collaboration with the civil engineering department on lateral loads for 3D printed modular housing components


Recently completed projects include a MITACS with Ottawa’s leading digitally-fabricated housing manufacturer, Advanced Building Innovation Company (ABIC) with Assistant Professor Jerry Hacker.

In 2024/25 her CSALT lab employs a team of seven undergraduates, four graduate students, and two PhDs who are collaborating on various DfMA processes and materials.
