Bz Zhang

Visiting Critic
Bz Zhang is an architect, organizer, and artist based in Tovaangar (so-called Los Angeles). As part of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, they work with communities toward environmental justice through design, construction, and stewardship of public green spaces. In their own practice, they use documentation and speculation to unravel physical and cultural constructions of place. By drawing pasts and presents of sites of extraction and migration, they hope to draw forth futures beyond settler colonialism, racial capitalism, and cisheteropatriarchy. Bz is a core organizer with the Design As Protest Collective and Dark Matter U, 2022 Journal of Architectural Education Fellow, 2021 USC Citizen Architect Fellow, and a licensed architect in California. They have taught architecture at the University of Southern California, California College of the Arts, University of Michigan, University at Buffalo, and University of California, Berkeley. Bz holds a Master of Architecture from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Visual Arts from Brown University.
