Everyone is welcome to attend the international conference, Cartographies of Loss: The Afterlives of War, taking place from September 15-18 at Carleton University.

The conference will investigate the often-overlooked links between corporeality and cartography. Central to the conference is the question of how to reconcile survivors’ experiences, the voices of the dead, and the need to map post-catastrophic urban infrastructures and ecologies.

The organizers include Associate Professors Jerzy Elżanowski and Susan Ross.

The conference and accompanying art exhibition will feature a series of panels, an evening lecture, as well as a free screening of Paper City (2021) at the Mayfair Theatre.

An exhibition of photographs, sculptures, and video works by Berlin-based artist Sonya Schönberger will be presented at the Lightroom Gallery in the Architecture Building, from Sept. 16 to Oct. 3. The show will open with an Artist Talk on Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Pit at the Architecture Building. (Exhibition hours are Monday–Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)

The conference will be held in a hybrid format and may be attended either in person or online.
