Scholarships – Graduate

Azrieli Entrance Scholarship

Awarded annually to an outstanding incoming graduate student pursuing research in architecture at the PhD or MAS level based on the recommendation of the Director of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism. There are approximately 6-10 recipients of this scholarship.

MAS and PhD Students do not need to apply, as they are automatically considered. These scholarships are valued at $5,000 for MAS students, and $10,000 for PhD students.

Barbara A. Humphries Memorial Scholarship in Architecture

Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Director of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, to a graduate student entering the Master of Architecture program at Carleton University who shows promise for outstanding contributions to the profession. Endowed in 2020 by the family of Barbara A. Humphreys, to commemorate her exceptional life and legacy.

Students entering the Master of Architecture (MArch) do not need to apply, as they are automatically considered.

Dialog/Michael Evamy Scholarship (*External Award)

The architectural scholarship in Honour of Michael Evamy is available to a Canadian student attending a Canadian school of architecture in the year prior to their final year of study of their professional degree program. The award provides financial assistance to the selected student to undertake a specific research project based on a field of study of interest to him or her. The intent of the study is to enrich and advance the candidate’s personal and professional experience and knowledge on a topic relevant to the practice of architecture.

Master of Architecture students (MArch) must apply through the Dialogue Design website. Submissions usually open around January. This scholarship is valued at $5,000, with a secondary amount up to $3,000 available for project related expenses, including travel, during the course of the investigation.

H.H. Hall Graduate Scholarship in Architecture

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism to a student in good academic standing who is entering the Master of Architecture: Professional Program. Established in 2004 by Dr. Beatrice Wickett Nesbitt in memory of her father, Henry H. Hall. Although Mr. Hall was not an architect by profession he used his talent to help community and friends in designing and building homes and churches. In the late 1880’s and early twentieth century there were few trained architects. Mr. Hall planned to become an architect but circumstances did not allow him to follow his love of architecture as a career path.

John Lyndhurst Kingston Scholarship

It is awarded annually to an outstanding graduate student studying in a discipline within the Faculties of Arts and Public Affairs and Management, Social Sciences, Science (including Computer Science), or Engineering, whose work is aimed at the betterment of our society. This scholarship was endowed in 1984 by Mrs. Leslie Kingston in memory of her late husband John L. Kingston, Architect. 

Graduate students must apply on Carleton Central.

John Ruddy Architecture Scholarship

Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, on the recommendation of the Director of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism, to one or more outstanding graduate students entering or continuing in the Masters of Architecture program. Endowed in 2004 by John Ruddy, B.Arch/75. 

Masters of Architecture program students entering or continuing the program do not need to apply, as they are automatically considered.

Maxwell Taylor Scholarship

This scholarship, which was endowed in 1998 by a bequest from the estate of the late Mabel Leona Taylor, is awarded annually to a student in their final year of the master’s program in Architecture who incorporates building technologies into his/her thesis project. The recipient is chosen by the Director of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism.

Students in the final year of the master’s program in Architecture are automatically considered based on their thesis work.

Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)

Students in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels can apply for a merit-based scholarship through the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) Program. Awards are available to graduate students for all disciplines of academic study.

RCA Arthur Erickson Travel Study Scholarship

The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the Arthur Erickson Family and the Arthur Erickson Foundation annually co-sponsor the Arthur Erickson Travel Study Scholarship, open to all students in their final semester of an accredited Canadian graduate school of architecture. Applications, which must include a detailed travel/study proposal, are due Oct. 1. For more information, contact info@rca-arc.ca.

RCA Ernst Annau Travel Study Scholarship

The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts annually offers the Ernst Annau Travel Study Scholarship to graduate schools of architecture of Canada on a rotating basis. Selected schools then propose a candidate for the RCA’s consideration. Deadline for applications is Oct. 1. For more information, contact info@rca-arc.ca.

The John Adjeleian Graduate Scholarship in Structural Design

Awarded annually, in alternate years, to an outstanding graduate student in the School of Architecture or in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.  The recipient will be undertaking research in the area of structural engineering or design.  This award is not renewable.  If a recipient is unavailable in one academic unit, it can be awarded to a student in the other.  The recipient will be selected by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design.  Endowed in 2001 by former faculty member, John Adjeleian.

The Queen Elizabeth II Grad Scholarships in Science

The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships (QES) aim to activate a dynamic community of young global leaders to create lasting impacts both at home and abroad through inter-cultural exchanges encompassing international education, discovery and inquiry, and professional experiences.

Trudeau Scholarship (*External Award)

This three-year leadership program is designed to train Engaged Leaders, equipping outstanding doctoral candidates with the skills to translate their ideas into action, for the betterment of their communities, Canada, and the world. Scholars are selected each year and receive leadership training in the context of Brave Spaces, in addition to generous funding for their studies.

Doctoral students must apply through the Trudeau Foundation. Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholars receive up to $40,000 per year for three years to cover tuition and reasonable living expenses to focus on their doctoral studies and the Foundation’s leadership program, and up to $20,000 per year for three years, for the learning of languages, for travel and accommodations for the Foundation’s leadership program and for research, networking, and travel related to their doctoral research.

Vanier Scholarship

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program helps Canadian institutions attract highly qualified doctoral students. The scholarship considers three equally weighted selection criteria: Academic Excellence, Research Potential, and Leadership (potential and demonstrated ability).

Doctoral students must be nominated to be considered for this scholarship. ASAU can nominate one student each year; this nomination is sent to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in September. The Vanier CGS is valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies.
