Endowed in 2020 by the family of Barbara A. Humphreys, this award will support Kettler as he joins the Master of Architecture program at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism in September 2021.

The legacy of Barbara Humphreys at Carleton includes the establishment of the Barbara A. Humphreys Reading Room in the former Technical Data Room (TDR) in the Architecture Building.

Humphreys, of Manotick, ON, was one of the first women architects in Canada, a pioneer in the heritage and conservation movement, and a teacher to generations of architecture students at Carleton University. She died in 2017 at the age of 97.

Her husband Doug Humphreys and daughter Gwyneth Humphreys made the gift. Mr. Humphreys signed the papers for the donation at a ceremony at his home on June 7, 2020 — the day he turned 100.

Several years ago, Humphreys’ family offered book collection to school, where it is housed in the Nan Griffiths Reading Room, together with Griffiths’ books and those of former Director Gil Sutton.

Like Humphreys, Kettler completed his undergraduate degree in architecture at the University of Manitoba.

“A variety of ideas and cross-pollination is paramount to me, which is why Carleton stands alone,” he says. “I know at Carleton I will have many unique perspectives to consider, and the more fluent I become in the design language of those around me, the more expressive my ideas will become.”
