Cabin by Assoc. Prof. Paul Kariouk’s firm among Dezeen’s top mass-timber buildings of 2022

January 12, 2023

Dezeen’s list of the top nine mass-timber buildings of 2022 includes a cabin by Associate Professor Paul Kariouk’s firm, Kariouk Architects.

The m.o.r.e. cabin in Wakefield, QC, is a dramatic cantilevered holiday home designed to stand out from its natural surroundings overlooking a lake.

The cabin was constructed from a combination of glulam beams, CLT panels, and additional steel supports.

It was the only project from Canada on the list published in December 2022, which includes entries from Austria, the USA, the UK, Norway, and Switzerland.

The m.o.r.e. cabin also received an award of merit in the architecture category in the 2022 Design Awards the AIA Canada Society gave in November 2022.

A second project by Kariouk’s firm, Forest Retreat in Caledon, ON, received an Honourable Mention in the architecture category from AIA Canada.

The Forest Retreat home was placed on an existing cleared ridge overlooking a wildflower meadow to avoid cutting trees. The long, tent-like roof and its ridge beam became the design’s primary focus, shaping the circulation path through the home’s interior, ultimately extending a view toward the forest.
