February 12, 2021 – Ozayr Saloojee has been named the incoming Associate Editor of Design for the Journal of Architectural Education (JAE). Saloojee is an Associate Professor at Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism. Beyond his personal research and teaching, he is creating new platforms for students to engage in critically important studio work surrounding equity, justice, contested territories, radical acts of joy, and more. He will join the board on July 1, 2021. 

Saloojee is also a co-director of the Carleton Urban Research Lab and cross-appointed faculty at the university’s Institute for African Studies. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, he has taught in Canada, Europe, and the United States. He completed his BArch and post-professional MArch (Theory and Culture), at Carleton and completed his doctoral work at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. His teaching and academic interests investigate politically contested terrains through the intersections of architecture, landscape, and geo-imaginaries, including sites in the Great Lakes, as well as South Africa, Turkey, and the Middle East. His work explores themes and questions of equity, infrastructure, water, decoloniality, storytelling, and the accountability of love.

I’m honoured and excited that he will bring this to JAE, and I look forward to the many conversations ahead.” 

Lynne Dearborn, president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) welcomes Dr. Saloojee to the role of Associate Editor of Design on behalf of the ACSA Board of Directors. She says, “Saloojee brings a transdisciplinary perspective to his work that we anticipate will support the next chapter in the JAE’s contributions to on-going discourse in architectural education and ACSA’s strategic efforts. He assumes this editorial position from Carolina Dayer, who has most ably contributed to shaping JAE’s design discourse since 2017. As the JAE moves into its 75th year of publication, we look forward to its continued innovative leadership in critical conversations within the discipline of architecture.”

The Journal of Architectural Education is a biannual peer-reviewed academic journal published by Routledge on behalf of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The JAE has been the primary venue for research and commentary on architectural education since it was founded in 1947, making it the oldest continuously operating journal of its kind.
