This model is a play on the idiomatic expression, “you can’t fit a square peg in a round hole,” and is intended to be a reflection of how design can be an exclusionary act. Just as the round hole is unaccommodating of other shapes, so too is our built environment of people and their differing needs. While design is permeated by our unconscious biases, there is a pertinent need to recognize other perspectives in order to break down existing barriers. Similarly to the act of chipping away at the ‘round hole’, recognizing our own unconscious bias is a step toward breaking the mold.
