Damiano Aiello is a licensed civil engineer in Italy and a PhD student at Carleton University’s School of Architecture and Urbanism since 2020. He was granted his master’s degree in Building Construction from University of Catania, Italy, in 2018. He is currently involved with Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS), a research lab affiliated with the ASAU that focuses on advanced digital technologies and hybrid forms of representation. Prior to Carleton, Damiano was awarded two Erasmus+ scholarships and gained multiple research fellowships at the University of Catania and Politecnico di Milano aimed at the documentation and digitization of Italian and Greek Cultural Heritage and the development of Virtual and Augmented Reality experiences. He has participated in international research and co-authored articles on topics related to the documentation, visualization and dissemination of architectural heritage through digital technologies. Damiano’s research interests are centered around the social, cultural, political, and economic implications of the current heritage paradigm defined by UNESCO, with a focus on contested places. The pivotal topics underlying his work are related to social justice, decolonization, violence, space, world heritage label and the relationship between such categories and the built environment.
